Andy and I had some friends over for dinner the other night. One of the guys has - by most people’s account - a pretty phenomenal job. I personally know about a dozen people who would love to work where he works doing what he does.
As we were talking he said “I’m done there. I can just feel it.” He continued “I know we’re doing important work, and I’m pretty good at it, and I even like it, but it’s not for me anymore.”
In my mind I could hear those dozen people saying “are you nuts?” (and “are you hiring?”)
But our friend knows that God is calling him to something else. He has a pretty good idea what that is, and knows that the timing isn’t right just yet. But he’s prepared to make the change when the timing is right.
It’s scary to leave a job that so many other people would find amazing (or even just acceptable), but sometimes we have to take the leap. Because even though the title is awesome, or the salary is above decent, or the people we work with can’t be beat - we have to obey what God is calling us to.
But the good thing is, if each of us has the courage to follow God’s call on our own lives that opens up our old jobs for someone else - it gives them the opportunity to pursue what God is calling them to!
